Woman Holding a Book

SOMETHING OLD

SOMETHING NEW

SOMETHING STEAMY

SOMETHING TRUE-ISH

A Bookworm’s Vow

Just as a betrothed commits to finding four tokens to ensure good luck for their marriage, I am devoted to finding four books each month to fit my creatively 'altered' traditional rhyme.  I'll be reading and reviewing books in these four categories: something old, something new, something steamy, and something true-ish.  Join me every month to see if any of these may be something you want to add to your TBR (to be read) list.  If there are no objections...you may read the books!

MY RATINGS

My loves

There are few things I love as much as diving into a new book...and one of them is an extra hot cup of coffee.  My ratings reflect this.

One coffee-meh. I may not even finish this one. Strong dislike.

Two coffees-finished it.  Didn't hate it.  Not sure if I even liked it though.

Three coffees-decent story. Something is holding me back from loving it.

Four coffees-enjoyed this book. A definite recommend.

Five coffees: loved this book so much I may not loan out my copy.  May become a reread.

Now for those 'steamy' ratings.

No peppers: Bland! Love/romance not a major part of this story.

One pepper: Mild! Some love scenes; nothing risque on the page; fade to black

Two peppers: Moderate! Slightly descriptive romantic scenes may occur on page; some implied innuendos

Three peppers: Hot! Blushing while reading may occur; lots of spice

BOOK CATEGORIES

What qualifies in each category? Let me explain how a book might be included...

Something old: I may decide a book belongs here because it's, well, old.  Maybe it was written [insert old sounding number here] years ago.  Perhaps it's a book I read awhile ago, and have decided to revisit.  It's possible that I checked out a book from the library that just has that old book smell.  This is also the category where any classics will likely be reviewed.

Something new:  This category will have it all.  All the genres, all the characters, all the topics.  The only criteria is that it's new...to me.  Meaning I haven't read it before.  A book might find it's way here if it's an author I've just discovered, a book I've just been given, or a book that's been re-imagined or given new cover-art. There's no shortage of "new" books here (my shelf is full of new-to-me books that have been there...er, awhile).

Something steamy:  Does this category need any explanation?  Here you'll find the romance.  The light, fun, walk-in-the park love stories.  The dark, spicy, hide-the-book from your kids covers.  Not sure if you want as much "steam"?  Don't worry-I'll make sure to rate the romance level so you'll know if it matches your style.

Something true-ish.  Ish.  Three little letters that pack a big punch.  Those words mean everything.  While books here will include elements of truth or history, more often than not, they will still be fiction.  The bulk of the books here will be historical fiction, although an occasional non-fiction or biography might be found.

I reserve the right to categorize any and all books as I want, even if it doesn't make sense to anyone else.  Happy reading!

2025 Recap

Whew. 2 full years of blogging. I'll be honest, there are some months when this 'just for fun' venture feels more like work than play. I love reading, but I can't always anticipate months where I just won't have as much time as others; and in the past I've mapped out what books I'm going to read months in advance, leaving little room for spontaneous reading. That being said, I have learned a lot about myself as a reader through the beginning of my blogging journey. I ten
